At the end of April's Poetry month and immersing ourselves into the reading and writing of poetry, Camp Serazin's first graders perform Shel Silverstein's "Sick"! Today we had an author, Lane Walker, visit our second through fifth grade students. Mr. Walker is a Michigan principal and children's author. He has three published adventure novels that are set in nature. Prior to his visit to Crull Elementary, our fantastic friends at Literacy and Beyond (LAB) bought every student in grades second through fifth a copy of one of Mr. Walkers three adventure novels. Mr. Walker presented to students during a 45 minute assembly about how they can do anything they put their minds to. It was high energy, and had our students laughing, dancing, and excited to learn! Thank you to Mr. Walker and LAB for bringing us this amazing experience for our students. The students in fifth grade have been learning about the scientific method. Fifth graders have been using a case about Pellagra, a disease that was once theorized to be caused by a bacteria. A scientist was curious about the case and instead thought that it was caused by a lack of nutrition in the diet. He used the scientific method to find out the cause of Pellagra. Fifth graders used the scientific method to do a taste test between two different drinks. In Mrs. Fiedler's class, some children had a placebo and instead had two of the same drink- they were instead tricked by food coloring. :) The following pictures are from Mrs. Fiedler's fifth grade class doing their scientific method experiments. We are learning about the Sun! We have made a scale model (138.5 cm Sun to .5 Earth!) so we can understand just how big it is! We have also made a scientific drawing of the sun for our science journals.
